The ICJ has addressed pressing problems raised by the UN climate treaties and international customary law, and also of human rights law, the law of the sea and general international law.
To what extent has the ICJ opinion clarified the law? What are the consequences for states, and for international and domestic courts? Treaty and custom clarify the duties under principles as ‘no harm’ also for fossil fuel industry. Several of ICJ’s clear statements are in response to the Norwegian government’s submissions. One of the many questions to address is the way in which the Norwegian Supreme Court Climate judgment of 2020 holds up under the ICJ opinion.
Mads Andenæs chairs the panel with Christina Voigt, Ane Sydnes Egeland and Terjei Bekkedal as speakers.
Co-organisers are the Norwegian Association of International Law, and the Research Groups on International Law and on Climate Law.
